What does V.92 capability mean?
This means the modem is capable of receiving the
software necessary to negotiate a V.92 connection. You may be
required to get new software in order to have this modem function as
a V.92 modem. This may mean contacting your modem
manufacturer/vendor to acquire new software. The following two Web
sites provide links to all major modem manufacturer Web sites.

What
are the system requirements for V.92\V.44 features?
To experience V.92/V.44 features with Internet Of
Salisbury Internet Service, you will need several things to start:
- A V.92 enabled modem with V.44 support.
- A phone line capable of supporting a V.90 connection.
- You must dial into Internet Of Salisbury Internet Service
using an access number that is enabled for V.92 features. For
access number information, visit our homepage.
This site will show which Internet Of Salisbury
Internet Service access numbers have the features available.
V.92/V.44 features are not available with all Internet Of Salisbury
Internet Service access numbers.
Note:
- Individual modem models have different V.92/V.44
capabilities, not all modems provide them.
- A modem may provide some features but not all
- Each modem has specific ways to enable features.
For more information, please see the FAQ:
A V.92 modem will provide the following features if your modem can
connect using V.90 or V.34
Will V.92 provide any benefits for users who receive no benefits
from V.90?
No. If you have a V.90 modem and are only able to
connect at speeds not exceeding 31,200 BPS, you are connecting with
V.34 modulation and your phone line is not capable of supporting
V.90 modulation.
What
V.92 features are supported if the modem can connect using V.90 or
V.34?
We are supporting the following features:
Modem-on-Hold:
Allows the user to use the same phone line for both voice and data
(Internet), allowing them to receive an incoming call and allow the
user to stay connected to the Internet for up to 8 minutes.
(Call-waiting service from your phone company is required,
optionally, having Caller ID and Call-waiting service, on your phone
line, will allow the user to see the name and number of the caller).
This feature requires a V.92-capable modem and Modem-on-Hold
software in order for the call-waiting feature to work.
Each time you log in to Internet Of Salisbury Internet Service,
the Modem-on-Hold timers are started over at zero. You can use
Modem-on-Hold as often as you'd like within these two time limits:
Each time you place your Internet Of Salisbury Internet Service
Internet session on hold, there is a time limit of 8 minutes. After
8 minutes on hold, your Internet Of Salisbury Internet Service
Internet session will drop. To use Internet Of Salisbury Internet
Service, you will have to re-dial and log in again.
You may place your Internet Of Salisbury Internet Service Internet
session on hold more than once during a single login session, but
for no more than a total of 40 minutes during a single login
session. If you use the Modem-on-Hold feature for a total of 40
minutes, and return to your Internet session, your Internet session
will not be dropped, but you will not be able to use Modem-on-Hold
again during the same login session. If you attempt to use the
Modem-on-Hold feature more than 8 minutes, your Internet session
will drop. To use Internet Of Salisbury Internet Service, you will
have to login again. The Modem-on-Hold timers are started over.
Some modems offer outbound calling Modem-on-Hold, allowing you to
place your Internet session on hold while you make an outbound voice
call. Note: Not all modems support this feature
with V.34 modulation. You may need to set your modem to enable
Modem-on-Hold.
- Quick Connect:
Quick Connect learns about the connection between your modem,
the Phone Company, and Internet Of Salisbury, Inc., and uses
this information to optimize the next connection, this will help
you get online faster. Quick Connect remembers your line
conditions from your previous Internet Of Salisbury Internet
Service session and bypasses portions of the modem training
sequence. Quick Connect will help only if you dial from the same
PC, modem and phone line, to the same Internet Of Salisbury
Internet Service access number.
Note:
- You may need to set your modem to enable Quick Connect.
- Not all modems support this feature.
- The basic requirements for getting a high-speed
downstream connection remain the same as for V.90. You
probably will not see any improvement in your ability to
make a high-speed connection.
- V.44 Compression:
In addition to the V.92 features above, V.44 compression will be
part of this. Pages will load faster onto your screen with V.44,
the new data compression standard from the International
Telecommunications Union (ITU). V.44 improves on the older V.42
standard and is optimized for HTML-based data. Web pages,
graphics, and documents will load more quickly. E-mail and ASCII
type text files may show more modest improvement. Files that are
already compressed, such as JPEG and ZIP may not show
improvement.
Please note that not all V.92 capable modems offer V.44
compression. If your modem does support V.44 compression, you
may need to set your modem to enable it. Please contact your
modem manufacturer for instructions.

I cannot get V.90 performance. Will V.92 solve this problem?
No. V.92 is a feature enhancement to the V.90
standard. You must be receiving V.90 performance to benefit from the
V.92 improvements. Note: The V.92 standard includes
features such as Quick Connect, PCM Upstream, and Modem-on-Hold, but
it will not improve the downstream performance of V.90.

How do I
know if I am getting V.92 modulation?
Typically, you would find the V.92 modulation
reported in the connect message from the dialer's modem log. Some
modems may require adding extra settings to the dialer to see more
than transmit and/or receive speeds.
Some of the V.92 external modems have a V.92
indicator on their front panel. Alternately, you can directly
connect to your V.92 modem, using communication software such as
HyperTerminal in order to issue diagnostic commands to determine
your modem's modulation from the last connection.
Note: Some client modems
may display V.92 modulation but any display, like a modem log, will
not show V.92 modulation (even though the V.92 features such as
Modem-on-Hold, Quick Connect, and V.44 are available to the user).

Where can I go to get help with my V.92 modem?
Please refer to your modem manufacturer. Also,
there are many good Web sites dedicated to helping troubleshoot
modems that you can refer to, such as:

How
do I know if my V.90 modem can be upgraded to V.92?
The first place to start may be with the modem
manufacturer's Web site. This will require that you first identify
the product number and possibly the chipset being used in the modem.

Why am I not
seeing any improvement in connect times with my V.92 modem?
There is a ten to twenty percent improvement in
connect times. Quick Connect learns about the connection between
your modem, your local phone provider, and Internet Of Salisbury
Internet Service. It then uses this information to optimize the next
connection. This means that if you have a good connection, then you
will potentially see a 1 to 5 second improvement. Users who will
have the biggest improvements will be those with existing poor
connections (in excess of 40 seconds to negotiate).

The
Modem-on-Hold feature is not working on my V.92 modem. Why?
The V.92 Modem-on-Hold feature requires the
following:
- Call-Waiting on the user's phone line.
- Caller ID on Call-Waiting will allow for display of caller's
name and number.
- Modem-on-Hold application must be correctly installed and
enabled on the user's computer as specified by the modem
manufacturer.
- A V.90 connection must be established for this feature to
work.
Note: Third party vendor
Modem-on-Hold applications may not support the chipset that your
modem contains. Updated modem firmware and drivers may be required
for Modem-on-Hold to function properly.
If you meet all of the above requirements and you
are still unable to use Modem on Hold, please contact your modem
vendor/manufacturer for support.

I am not
seeing much improvement with V.44. Why?
The improvement you will see with V.44 is based on
three factors:
- The compressibility of the data. V.44 is compression
standard that is designed to improve the performance of HTML or
text type data. Note: If you are downloading
source code this type of data does not allow compression, you
will see no improvement. If the Web site is JAVA based and has
many graphic images, you will see some improvement. Files that
are already compressed, such as JPEG and ZIP may not show
improvement.
- The availability of the network. If the network is slow, the
data cannot be delivered quick enough to take advantage of V.44.
- The performance of the Web site that you are accessing. The
server may not be able to provide the data fast enough to take
advantage of V.44.
